Salé
Set in the 17th Century and inspired by the true events of “Tyrkjaránið” (Turkish Abductions) which took place in the summer of 1627 when Barbary corsairs from Morocco descended on the Southern coast of Iceland and captured hundreds of people.
In Salé, Gunnur, a young fisherman’s wife, and her daughter Gríma 13yrs are among the captured. Mother and daughter get separated and are sold to different masters on the slave market in Algiers. Their struggle for survival collides with Jan Janszoon — a Dutch captain turned Barbary admiral and empire-builder. Themes of displacement, resilience, and belonging make this forgotten history resonate powerfully with modern audiences.
